日本社会は働くことが人々のアンデンティティーになり過ぎていると思うので、今より切り離したほうがいいと思っています。失業したときの喪失感がみんな異様に深いんです。「もう自分はダメな人間になってしまった」と思ってしまうのです。今まで仕事をすることでしか評価されなかったから、仕事を失うと自分を失ったようになってしまう。そのため、失業して相談に来る人は、自分で自分を責め抜いて疲れ切ってしまっています。生きる力が奪われて、働く場所がなくなっても生きていていいということが、スッと通らなくなっている。
働くことは生活の一部のはずですが、日本の場合、「働くことの中に生活がある」といった雰囲気があり、この肥大化した働くことのイデオロギーを払拭するために、「働くってなに」というよりも、「生活するってどういうこと」という問いにしていきたい。働く以外に生活する生き方があっていいとか、そういう人が存在するという認識を広げないといけないと考えています。
社会保障の話になりますが、無業者が許容されるのは、「働けない」限り、という条件付きなんです。つまり、障害者や高齢者や子どもなどで、「この人たちは働けない人たちだから、働かないことによる生存を認めましょう」ということになる。しかし、働けるのに働いていない人に対する社会の許容度は恐ろしく狭く、自己責任論が急に跳ね上がる。ワーキングプアと呼ばれる、働いているけれど生きていけない人とか、引きこもりやニートの人は、そうなった途端に「なぜなのか」と過剰に意味を探られ、分析され続ける存在になってしまう。
仕事がなかなか決まらない人が、「面接で落ちるたびに、『お前なんかいらない』と言われているような気になる」と言います。社会的に存在を必要とされていないと感じ、落ちるたびにどんどん自信を失っていく。「仕事がないということであって、あなたが否定されたわけではない」という話は、すんなりとはわからない。しかし、ケン・ローチ監督なんかのヨーロッパ映画を観ていると、失業して失業給付をもらっている人がサッカーチームの監督をやったりして、失業することによる鬱屈が映らないわけです。もちろん鬱屈がまったくなくはないでしょうけれど、それがメインテーマにはならない。日本は、そういう意味で、ワーク・ライフ・バランスのような話が全然ピンとこない状況になってしまっていると思うのです。
